Australian Heritage Doors

Early 19th century architecture in Australia was largely modelled after the Edwardian architecture of Great Britain. By the end of the century, though, Australian architects had added unique elements of design that were more in keeping with the Australian climate and lifestyle. By the time of Australian Federation, a truly unique Australian architectural style had emerged: a style that was finally identified in 1969 as “Federation Style.” As the prestige joinery in Brisbane, Allkind Joinery has often been asked to create Federation style solid timber heritage doors, windows and architecture timber products for better homes and commercial properties throughout the greater Brisbane area.

Some of the hallmarks of Federation style include:

  • Smaller, more affordable homes than the grand mansions of Edwardian England. Although smaller, these homes retained the same fine craftsmanship and eye for detail of those on large estates.
  • Large, covered verandas (especially in Queensland homes) allowed homeowners to take advantage of the balmy Australian weather.
  • Decorative motifs included plants and animals of the Australian bush.
  • The timber of choice for timber entrance doors was the native Australian cedar.

So great was the demand for Australian cedar, the species was near extinction on the continent until steps were taken to protect it. More generically called Surian cedar, this beautiful timber is indigenous to all of southern Asia. Joineries like Allkind Joinery Brisbane that care about the environment source sustainable Surian cedar for use in making high quality solid timber doors and windows.

Heritage Doors from Allkind Joinery

Never a cabinet making company to compromise on quality, Allkind Joinery has been faithfully reproducing heritage style doors since they opened their doors in 1970. Not only does Allkind insist on using the best sustainable timbers, they build them to last. Whilst cheaper doors made from inferior timbers can be made to look like heritage doors from a distance, they lack the style and sophistication of genuine cedar doors and almost certainly won’t withstand the test of time.

If there has been one drawback to heritage doors made by prestige joinery, it has been that they have traditionally been prohibitively expensive for the average renovator. Allkind Joinery has removed this drawback with the introduction of their renovator’s range of solid timber doors. In all, there are 7 types of doors available in the Renovator’s Range:

  • Modern style entry doorsHeritage Doors Brisbane
  • Passage and patio doors
  • Pivot doors
  • Folding doors
  • French doors
  • Gates
  • Heritage doors

Also included in the range are the follow types of windows.

  • Double hung
  • Casement
  • Sliding
  • Hopper

All of these doors and windows are available in Surian cedar and the Heritage door collection is also available in even more affordable maple; an ideal timber for painting or staining. What’s the difference between these heritage doors and the custom made Architectural style doors Allkind Joinery has been making for over 40 years? Because they are made in quantities and standard sizes, Allkind Joinery can keep their prices down without compromising on quality.

Whilst not custom made, you can customise your order by choosing from several styles of doors and sidelights. If you prefer, choose one of two sizes of stunning entry suites that include leadlight side and top panels and intricate timber detailing.
